I've recently become aware that Sydney TAFE has organized tours of the Ultimo College - a very fine building by William E Kemp. Kemp also designed the Bourke St Public School in Surry Hills. UTS's own Dr Kirsten Orr is also a fan of Kemp's, so you should bother her about him and his work - try to bully her into a lecture.

Anyway, tours are being held 19 July (I'm trying to book into this one), 9 August, 6 September, 11 October, 8 November & 6 December.

What is lovely and relevant is how this scheme celebrates the vertical spiral circulation - actually a network of closed and open spaces (reminiscent of Lin Seen's ideas).

It can be seen at the Neutelings Riedijk website, and at Bustler, which has published the photo below as well as lots of drawings.

Some of the work presented last week reminded me of the very beautiful "Garden and House" by Ryue Nishizawa. The image below is from the El Croquis website.

The Canadian Centre for Architecture had a very beautiful exhibition on the work of Nishizawa and Stephen Taylor called Some Ideas on Living in London and Tokyo. The work of both Architects is very very good and the response of each to their respective cities is interesting. The catalogue of the exhibition is a very worthwhile purchase.

Caitlin has suggested a visit to the Art Gallery of NSW next Wednesday evening (18 May) see Caitlin's comments below).

I'd encourage you all to visit the Gallery and to wear your Architecture goggles. Walter Liberty Vernon's original building is very fine (pay attention to the facade as well as the interior). Andrew Anderson's first extension is, for me, his masterpiece. The Asian Wing by Johnson Pilton Walker is also very very fine.

The photographs below are by Max Dupain and show the lovely integration of the Anderson extension and Vernon's original building. The first photo is from an interview with Andersons and the second photo is from the National Archives of Australia.

I'd like to suggest perhaps another time though. The New Contemporary Galleries featuring the John Kaldor Family Collection opens on the weekend of the 21st. What I know of the Kaldor collection it'll be worth waiting for. Would there be any interest in a visit on Sunday 22nd or after Uni Wednesday on the 25th? I'd be happy to visit with you guys then (and show you my favorite bits), but only if more than 5 people are interested. Comment below to flag interest.

I have not seen enough of your work to understand progress and it would be something of a risk to reveal your work to me for the first time on the day of assessment. Please bring everything you can, regardless of how legible it is - that said, don't do any expensive prints and if you have a cumbersome model, then photos will do (this week only). Musaschino Art University Museum and Library

Given that a few of you are looking at providing library facilites, I thought i'd draw your attention to a few examples:

First up, Sou Fujimoto's Musaschino Art University Museum and Library.

I would have thought there'd be a lot of info online, but I can't find as much as expected. One good blog for coverage is HIC*, an architecture blog that appears to be from Barcelona, probably associated with Jordi Bardia. I have not known of this blog, but it looks good (with work by Claus en Kaan, Josep Lluís Mateo, Sergison Bates and others.

Here is the link to their Post on Fujimoto's library. What's especially lovely about this idea is that the built fabric of the library is shelving, an idea that arguably ties back to some of Shigeru Ban's Furniture Houses and perhaps even to Henri Labrouste.

The Right to the City - lecture and symposium

An exhibition, keynote lecture and symposium have been organized for the Tin Sheds Gallery very soon. The title, The Right to the City is taken from David Harvey (who you may want to read / listen to - more later). The keynote lecture is by Margaret Crawford who is very worthwhile and the symposium looks interesting. Friends from Bababa International will be participating.

Now, back briefly to David Harvey. Mr Harvey, in addition to his other work, has run a course reading Karl Marx's Capital Volume 1. It's all available on-line. What i've listened to has been very enjoyable and worthwhile.

Caitlin (still trying to remember names) asked yesterday about architecture travel guides. My experience is that the on-line guides are not yet sufficiently comprehensive. There is an understandable emphasis on buildings that were finished 5 minutes ago. Of the on-line guides I've found, I think mimoa.eu is perhaps the best. When we travel, what we tend to do is look through history books and note all the buildings we'd like to see in each city. Banister Fletcher is pretty good for pre-modern stuff in the Western World. Spiro Kostof's History of Architecture is good too. Major cities also often have good guides. Jones & Woodward's excellent Guide to the Architecture of London for example, though a new book for each new city would be an expensive option.

Following up on a conversation with Daniel:

Some ideas on typology that have been of interest to me recently have been developed by an Amsterdam developer, Het Oosten, with the assistance of a few Architects including Tony Fretton. A bit of a warning, their ideas may look very conservative to you and/or your tutors, and much of the literature is in Dutch (Google translate may help).

To summarize the potential application, one might think the following way:

Early twentieth century warehouse buildings provide a useful model for development based on typology rather than function. Whilst these buildings were designed to fulfil a specific brief of a warehouses (sometimes factories), they have proved very flexible. The high ceilings, efficient and regular structural grid, maximum depth plans, and loose fit construction have lent the buildings well to adaption. They have successfully been converted to Artist studios, apartments, offices, gallery spaces etc.

Using this type as an idea, is it possible to build this type of flexible building today. The high ceilings permit the easy insertion of plumbing, electrical and mechanical services. The structural grid establishes a pattern for subdivision of floors (related to the façade) and, designed correctly permits local slab penetrations for passenger and service lifts as required. The depth of plan allows an efficient layout with useful access to the façade for light, ventilation, and for engagement with the city. The loose fit construction provides the opportunity for tenants to freely adapt and tailor their tenancies. The building at the façade and street level respond to the city rather than to specific internal functions.

Local typological models for this type of development include the warehouses of Camperdown, Pyrmont and Surry Hills.

.... and then there is a really nice project for facade idea. There were a couple of facade that were using 'blades' vertically or horizontally - I thought it might be nice to think of opportunities in different materials, in particular in this case being mirror/glass which refracts the light beautifully. There was a student (towards the end) where he had a facade based on the Surry Hills library and maybe he can think of his facade as the 'gem' of his design. ?!

Natalie Brcar (another one of your jurors - again said just in case I didn't introduce you properly) has sent me the following note:

Phillip,

It was lovely to be a part of your design studio and see the design projects.

I have a few images that I thought may (or may not : ) be of use to some of your students.

I noticed a common thread in all projects, and that is how to address quality of 'space' and designing useable living spaces with small floor plates as a result of a small site and circulation constraints. It would be good to see the projects develop now from last nights concept ideas for form and circulation and turn these into useable, quirky and lovely spaces that grab any opportunity for daylight and ventilation. Find attached images of the Mineral House Project in Tokyo by Yasuhiro Yamashita - each use is on a separate floor and highlights that you actually don't need a lot of space for living and can be just clever joinery deign and detail.
